Food is Mood

There comes a time when all the Topsy-turvy of life will set in to weigh you down. You would want to continually bask in the atmosphere of fun and grooving, and would feel the need to remain alive and elated in every moment.

But sometimes, you become utterly fatigued reiterating ‘I am not in mood today?’ when opportunities sprout forth to explore life and be fulfilled. Then, I dare to ask, how often do you postpone your important activities because of your erratic mood swings? And how much loss do you incur because of that?

Many never seek to discover that mood is the natural happy and peaceful state of mind and demands constant checks. It is just like a magnet that can attract objects but when demagnetized can’t lift anything. Similarly, when we are in a blissful mood we can even lift mountains but when not in such mood frame, even a feather seems too heavy.

Your mood and countenance matter a lot in shaping your life and with a positive mindset, you can rule the day.
Deviating a little, the subject of diet is one of the foremost topics of the present day in public interest. Newspapers and magazines teem with articles on the subject. The counters of the bookshops are filled with volumes unfolding the mysteries of proteins, starches, vitamins, and so forth. Now the whole world is food-conscious.

Experts on the subject say that physically you become the thing that you eat. Your whole body is really composed of the food that you have eaten. What you eat today will be in your bloodstream after the lapse of so many hours, and it is your blood-stream that builds all the tissues composing your body. Of course, no sensible person has any quarrel with all these. It is perfectly true. But more to that is the effect of the food you take and the mood you keep.

Now on the core of discussion, one could say there is an undying correlation between the food you take and the mood you keep. We all are aware that every action has a reaction. Same is true with food and mood. We could stress that our moods are the reactions of the quality of food we accept and take in. When we talk of adopting healthy dietary patterns, we mean at both levels of mind and body.

Rarely does anybody need to be told about healthy food for the body, but what actually does food to the mind mean? Food in this context is your thoughts and feelings which contribute equally or rather to greater extent in keeping up your well being and psychological balance. Ignoring either of them (thoughts and feelings) would make us unsuccessful. Thus, if we are extremely careful in taking physical diet but don’t care for proper diet supplied to our minds, having a bad mood is inevitable. Similarly, if you are taking care of your thoughts but ignore the physical food, then also your mood may fluctuate.

Keeping good mood is never a challenge. It would naturally stay with us. The truth is that it is only a challenge to choose the appropriate food for the self. Whether it’s a lack of awareness or a lack of strength which averts us from making healthy choices, but this is a fact that fluctuation in our mood today is merely because of the chronic ill eating habits we have developed.

The most important of all factors in your life is the mental food on which you survive on. It is the food which you furnish to your mind that determines the whole character of your life. It is the thoughts you allow yourself to think, the subjects that you allow your mind to dwell upon that shapes your being. What you think and feel govern your internal atmosphere which is your mood. Your mood in turn affects everything in your life.

Everything in your life today - the state of your body, whether healthy or sick; the state of your fortune, whether prosperous or impoverished; the state of your home, whether happy or the reverse; the present condition of every phase of your life - is entirely conditioned by the thoughts and feelings, that is the mental food, you have taken in.

Similarly, the condition of your life tomorrow, next week and next year will be entirely conditioned by the mental food (thoughts) which you choose to consume from now onwards. If you change your diet, your conditions must change too. Your body must change, your daily work or other activities must change, your home must change, and the color-tone of your whole life must change as well.

As such, whether you will be habitually happy and cheerful, or low-spirited and fearful, depends entirely on the quality of the mental food upon which you diet yourself. Please be very clear about this. We are transformed by the renewing of the quality of food we consume. Your mental diet is really the most important thing in your whole life.

In short, if you want to make your life happy and worthwhile, which is what God wishes you to make it, you must begin immediately to train yourself in the habit of maintaining the quality and appropriate quantity of the food (thoughts) you take in. This will be exceedingly difficult for the first few days, but if you persevere you will find that it will become rapidly easier, and it is actually the most interesting experiment that you could possibly make.

Nevertheless, you will be amazed at the interesting things you will learn about yourself, and you will get results almost from the beginning when you take in the right food for your mind, body and soul. In fact, taking care of your mental appetite is the most thrilling and interesting hobby and task that anyone could take up.

You need not be told otherwise, your food is your mood. Try feeding your mind, body and soul with the right and apt food and you would see your life entering a whole new phase of glee and content. The choice is yours!
